Murdock

Location: Coonawarra
James Halliday Rating: 4 ½ stars
The Murdock family, have been associated with the Coonawarra since the early 1950's. The vineyard is planted to 10ha of Cabernet, 2 ha of Shiraz, 1 ha of Merlot with ½ hectare plantings of Chardonnay & Riesling. The Murdock family vineyard, is situated on the terra rossa strip of soil and was originally planted in 1973. The vineyard is situated adjacent to Leconfield, Bowen Estate & Balnaves of Coonawarra.
The family owned company has always meticulously managed the fruit yields on the vineyard with the sole aim of producing the finest grapes possible. This has resulted in exceptional quality berries of great intensity of flavour and character. In the past, the Murdock's have sold the highly sought after fruit to other Coonawarra producers.
Murdock is a small, family operated business which commenced making ultra premium wines in 1998. Prior to this the family business supplied fruit of exceptional standard to other, well established wine brands within Coonawarra.
Varieties planted are Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot, Riesling and Chardonnay, which are dry grown with yields naturally restricted to around 5 Tonnes/Ha or less.
Select parcels expressing the best varietal character are then identified each vintage. These are carefully vinified by contract winemaker, Pete Bissell to create boutique wines that express true regional character, but more importantly the individuality of vineyard and associated viticultural practices.
Quality is the primary aim, and therefore production will always be limited.

2001 Murdock Reisling

“Light straw-green; and aromatic and flowery bouquet of lime and passionfruit leads into a lively, lemon/citrus palate, with a long, intense finish sustained by food acidity. Just when you thought Murdock was all about Cabernet Sauvignon, this comes along”

1999 Murdock Cabernet Sauvignon
 |
“Full red purple with a clean and powerful bouquet, classic blackberry, currant Coonawarra Cabernet aromas. Palate has ripe but not jammy fruit; almost velvety cassis and mulberry flavours dominate with fine tannins on the finish. Double Gold at the 2000 Sydney International Wine Competition - a great achievement for the vintage.”
94pts – James Halliday Wine Companion 2004
“Wow, this is a real find! Low-yielding, mature vines and a superb vintage have combined to make this an exciting debut. Everything is in the right place, with a seamless texture, finely integrating oak and savoury fine- grained tannins.”
5 stars - Huon Hooke & Ralph Kyte-Powell
“Only the second Cabernet produced under this label, and it's fine and long-flavoured, with just enough sweet-fruit character and elegant, elongated structure to set it as a perfect cellaring proposition. Not remotely overdone.”
Campbell Mattinson - Decanter Magazine, Volume 29 No 11, Aug '04
“In recent years several mature Coonawarra vineyards have produced wine under their own labels for the first time. These high quality growers traditionally provided quality grapes to other makers. Murdock is an example, and the cabernets put out so far have been spectacular. The'99 has super-dense colour, indicating loads of extract, and an absolutely classical Coonawarra cabernet personality – a touch earthy, a touch leafy, with profound blackcurrant liqueur/crushed blackcurrant fruit. The ripe, silky palate has gorgeous intense fruit and a stylish dressing of cedary oak that melts seamlessly into the pristine fruit character. It is medium-weight, long and fine in texture with perfectly poised, ripe tannins.”
Ralph Kyte-Powell - Age Epicure, Sep '03
“With just a couple of vintages released, the Murdock family has established a name for producing outstanding red wines. The key to this success is two-fold: on one hand, the Murdocks have secured the talents of Pete Bissell, one of Coonawarra's top winemakers. The other crucial factor is the vineyard: although the Murdock label is new, the vines were originally planted 30 years ago - a maturity reflected in the depth and persistence of classic regional mulberry fruit flavour that sets this cabernet apart. Although it's approaching its fifth birthday, it will develop well in the cellar for at least another decade.”
