Location: Hunter Valley
James Halliday Rating: 4 starsIan Peterson, a pharmacist, his wife Shirley and son Colin purchased an old dairy farm known as Glenesk at Mount View in 1964, with the intention of raising beef cattle. In 1971 ten acres of Semillon were planted to supply McWilliam's winery. This was to be the commencement of a very successful vineyard on the rich soils of Mount View in the Lower Hunter Valley.
In 1980 thirty acres of vines had been planted, consisting of Semillon, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir. In 1981 the decision was made to produce two wines, Chardonnay & Shiraz. The first release of wines also brought their first medal.
The vineyard has since been planted out to 40 acres with new plantings of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Viognier. In 2001 Peterson's have established a new winery aimed at small batch wine production while maintaining the superior quality for which Peterson's are renowned.

2001 Petersons Ian's Selection Shiraz
 |
Another excellent parcel of Shiraz selected by founder Ian Peterson. A dark red wine with an attractive crimson hue. Highly perfumed bouquet of cloves, cedar, cinnamon and spicy plum. The palate is delighted by soft, plum fruit integrated with cloves, cinnamon and rich, soft vanillin oak. With well balanced acids and medium to firm tannins the palate is lengthened in order to savour the long lingering aftertaste of milk chocolate, fruit and spice. Cold soaked for 5 days prior to a cool 14 day open vat fermentation, held on skins a further 6 days before pressing, and matured in American oak for 14 months. Due to minimal handling and filtration a harmless crust may develop in the bottle Cellar 5-8 years.
